FOA Mobile Device Management

FOA Mobile Device Management (MDM)

What is MDM, and why is it important?

Mobile Device Management helps UC Davis protect sensitive information on university-owned phones and tablets. It’s a tool that keeps our devices secure, updated, and compliant with UC policies. Administrative IT Client Services manages MDM for all Finance, Operations and Administration (FOA) departmental devices.

If your device is enrolled in MDM, it means it’s better protected against threats like data breaches or stolen information. This helps safeguard not only UC Davis data — but your personal data, too.

MDM also makes it easier to:

  • Set up new devices
  • Keep track of university equipment
  • Access tech support when needed
  • Stay compliant with security and audit requirements

What does MDM change for me?

In most cases, very little. You’ll still use your phone or tablet like you always have — calling, texting, browsing, using apps, etc.

 What will change:

  • Your device will need a passcode (a basic security measure).
  • You’ll get access to the self-serve UC Davis App Store.
  • No Apple ID is required for setup.
  • If your device is lost or stolen, we can help lock or wipe it remotely to protect your information.

What won’t change:

  • We can’t see your screen, your apps, or your search history.
  • We can’t track your location or take remote control of your device.
  • We can’t install updates without your knowledge, only recommend them.

What if my device is already in use?

For new devices, the process is simple: just let us know before turning it on so we can collect the serial number, then follow the on-screen setup prompts using your UC Davis login.

For devices already in use, a technician will help you:

  1. Back up your data
  2. Reset (wipe) the device, which is required by Apple to enable MDM
  3. Restore your data after enrollment

Resetting a device may sound scary, but we’ll guide you through the process to make sure nothing is lost.

Can I use my device for personal stuff?

Yes, but with a little caution. Like your UC Davis-issued computer, the device is university property and could be subject to audit, subpoena or return. We recommend avoiding storing anything you wouldn’t want to lose or share on a university device.

Why is MDM required?

Every mobile device on our network is a potential access point for cyber threats. To help protect the UC system, the Office of the President issued a directive that all university-owned devices be enrolled in MDM. This policy is about safety and responsibility — it protects you, your work, and the entire university community.
