Spring has finally sprung here in Davis.  Now is the time to do your spring cleaning.  Merriam-Webster defines Spring Cleaning as the act or process of doing a thorough cleaning of a place.  Most people associate spring cleaning with their homes.  However, now is also a great time to do some 'digital' spring cleaning.  Like cleaning your home, the work won't be fun, but you'll improve your security and your devices might run faster.

Change Your Campus Directory Listing

The UC Davis staff directory is a helpful tool for letting the campus community know how to contact you. It’s also connected to the campus’s email system, so changes that you make to your directory listing will also show up when someone searches for you in Outlook.

Use Adapters for Projector Presentation

It seems that nowadays, as fast as you can say, “I just bought a new laptop”, computer technology has changed again.  New computers are faster, smarter, and smaller than ever, but often the devices we use them with are not as current.  One of the main struggles with the newer laptop is that it does not have a VGA plug (see below).  If you want to use your laptop for a presentation, but need an adapter to use the projector, you can visit the Safety Services Business Office and check out a VGA to HDMI adapter. 

Play a Sound When You Press Caps Lock or Num Lock

Have you ever been typing a message to someone and suddenly EVERYTHING’S IN CAPS AND IT SEEMS LIKE YOU’RE YELLING AT THEM? Or have you used the numeric keypad to quickly input numbers, but instead the cursor jumps around the screen or changes to insert mode?

In these cases, the culprit is probably one of the toggle keys: Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock (don’t worry – nobody knows what Scroll Lock does). If you want to avoid accidentally enabling one of these keys, Windows can help by playing a notification sound when one of these keys is pushed.

Adjust Volumes Per Application

When audio for an application is too loud or too soft, Windows' volume mixer can be used to adjust the volume on a per-application basis. The volume mixer can be found by right-clicking the speaker icon in the taskbar and selecting Open Volume Mixer.
